The flurry of Wi-LAN, Inc. (WiLAN) litigation over former Motorola patents that the publicly traded NPE received from Freescale in October 2015 continued this past week. Through its North Star Innovations, Inc. subsidiary, WiLAN has now launched five campaigns asserting those acquired patents, four of which remain active. This past week it added a case against Sony (1:16-cv-00359) to a campaign that already includes Toshiba and Sharp, and it kicked off a new campaign with a single complaint against both Cypress Semiconductor and UMC (1:16-cv-00368), asserting a semiconductor fabrication patent, a chip packaging patent, and a memory circuit patent received from Freescale.
