in response to a user action, requesting first web page data from a source of web page data;

receiving said first web page data including a reference to second web page data;

locating said reference to said second web page data in said first web page data;

automatically requesting said second web page data using said reference;

rendering a first web page in a first panel from said first web page data using a first instance of a web browsing engine; and

rendering a second web page in a second panel from said second web page data using a second instance of said web browsing engine.

Abstract

A system and method for web browsing contemporaneously displays multiple web pages, preferably within a single window, for a user to view. In a preferred embodiment, a current web page, a past web page, and a future web page are contemporaneously displayed in a single window. In this embodiment, the present invention tracks a past web page and renders it in a first panel, renders the current web page in a second panel, and identifies a hyperlink in the current web page to retrieve and render the future web page in a third panel. Preferably, all of these panels are embedded within a single window. In this manner, the user contemporaneously views the current web page, the past page, and the future web page in the single window. Preferably, a web browsing room is implemented in a three-dimensional space where walls of the rooms correspond to various ones of the aforementioned panels. The user can view the web pages in the browsing room using various three-dimensional navigation techniques.

- in response to a user action, requesting first web page data from a source of web page data;
  
  receiving said first web page data including a reference to second web page data;
  
  locating said reference to said second web page data in said first web page data;

    - locating a reference to third web page data in said second web page data;
      
      automatically requesting said third web page data using said reference to third web page data;
      
      rendering a third web page in a third panel using said third web page data.
  - 6. The method of claim 4, further comprising:
    - locating a reference to third web page data in said second web page data;
      
      automatically requesting said third web page data using said reference to third web page data; and
      
      rendering a third web page in said second panel from said third web page data.
  - 7. The method of claim 6, further comprising rendering said first web page in a third panel from said first web page data.
  - 8. The method of claim 7, further comprising rerendering said first web page in said first panel from said first web page data in response to said user selecting said first web page.
  - 9. The method of claim 8, wherein said rerendering said first web page comprises rerendering said first web page in said first panel from said first web page data in response to said user selecting said first web page from said third panel.
  - 10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
    - requesting third web page data;
      
      rendering a third web page in said first panel from said third web page data; and
      
      upon said user action, rendering said third web page in a third panel.
  - 11. The method of claim 10, wherein said third web page data includes a reference to said first web page data.
  - 12. The method of claim 1, wherein said first panel and said second panel are configured in separate planes in a three-dimensional space.
  - 13. The method of claim 5, wherein said first panel, said second panel are configured in separate planes in a three-dimensional space.
  - 14. The method of claim 13, wherein said first panel, said second panel, and said third panel are configured in separate planes in said three-dimensional space.

15. A method for browsing web pages comprising:
- rendering a first web page in a first panel using first web page data using a first instance of a web browsing engine;
  
  locating a reference to second web page data in said first web page data;
  
  automatically requesting said second web page data using said located reference; and
  
  rendering a second web page in a second panel using said second web page data using a second instance of said web browsing engine.

    - rendering a third web page in said first panel using said third web page data; and
      
      upon a user action, requesting said first web page data; and
      
      rendering said third web page in a third panel.

  - 18. The method of claim 16, wherein said first panel, said second panel, and said third panel are configured in separate planes in a three-dimensional space.

19. A method for browsing web pages comprising:
- requesting first web page data from a source of web page data;
  
  rendering a first web page in a first panel using said first web page data using a first instance of a web browsing engine;
  
  requesting second web page data in response to a user action;
  
  rendering a second web page in said first panel using said second web page data; and
  
  rerendering said first web page in a second panel using a second instance of said web browsing engine.

    - locating a reference to third web page data in said second web page data;
      
      requesting said third web page data using said located reference; and
      
      rendering a third web page in a third panel.

  - 22. The method of claim 20, wherein said first panel, said second panel and said third panel are configured in a three-dimensional space as a center wall, a left wall, and a right wall of a room, respectively.
  - 23. The method of claim 20, wherein said rendering said third web page in said third panel comprises rendering said third web page as a thumbnail image in said third panel.
  - 24. The method of claim 20, wherein said rerendering said first web page in said second panel comprises rendering said first web page as a thumbnail image in said second panel.

25. An apparatus for web browsing comprising:
- a computer;
  
  a web browser operating on said computer, said web browser including a first panel that includes a past web page, a second panel that includes a current web page, and a third panel that includes a future web page; and
  
  a trimonitor including a first display device portion that displays said first panel, a second display device portion that displays said second panel, and a third display device portion that displays said third panel.

26. A method for bookmarking web pages in a web browser comprising:
- storing a bookmark for a scene rendered by the web browser, said scene including a first web page and a second web page, said bookmark including a reference to said first web page and a reference to said second web page;
  
  selecting said stored bookmark; and
  
  recalling said scene by rendering said first web page and said second web page, wherein said rendering said first web page and said second web page comprises;
  
  rendering said first web page using a first instance of a web browsing engine, andrendering said second web page using a second instance of said web browsing engine.

- - 27. The method of claim 26, wherein said second web page is a past web page.

29. A method for bookmarking web pages in a web browser comprising:
- storing a bookmark for a scene rendered by the web browser, said scene including a first web page and a second web page, said bookmark including a reference to said first web page and a reference to said second web page;
  
  selecting said stored bookmark; and
  
  recalling said scene by rendering said first web page and said second web page, wherein said bookmark further includes a display location for said first web page.

30. A method for bookmarking web pages in a web browser comprising:
- storing a bookmark for a scene rendered by the web browser, said scene including a first web page and a second web page, said bookmark including a reference to said first web page and a reference to said second web page;
  
  selecting said stored bookmark; and
  
  recalling said scene by rendering said first web page and said second web page,wherein said second web page is a sticky web page, wherein said bookmark further includes a display location for said first web page.

31. A method for browsing web pages comprising:
- requesting first web page data from a source of web page data;
  
  rendering a first web page in a first panel using said first web page data and a first web browsing engine;
  
  requesting second web page data in response to a user action;
  
  rendering a second web page in said first panel using said second web page data; and
  
  rendering said first web page in a second panel using said first web page data and a second web browsing engine.

- - 32. The method of claim 31, further comprising:
    - locating a reference to third web page data in said second web page data;
      
      requesting said third web page data using said located reference; and
      
      rendering a third web page in a third panel.

  - 34. The method of claim 32, wherein said first panel, said second panel and said third panel are configured in a three-dimensional space as a center wall, a left wall, and a right wall of a room, respectively.
  - 35. The method of claim 32, wherein said rendering said third web page in said third panel comprises rendering said third web page as a thumbnail image in said third panel.
  - 36. The method of claim 32, wherein said rerendering said first web page in said second panel comprises rendering said first web page as a thumbnail image in said second panel.

37. A display system including at least one display device on which is rendered a graphic user interface, the graphical user interface comprising:
- a room in a three-dimensional space, said room having a first wall, a second wall, and a third wall,wherein said first wall includes a past web page rendered thereon, said past web page rendered using a first web browsing engine,wherein said second wall includes a current web page rendered thereon, said current web page rendered using a second web browsing engine, andwherein said third wall includes a future web page rendered thereon, said future web page rendered using a third web browsing engine.

- - 38. The display system of claim 37, wherein said current web page includes a hyperlink.
  - 39. The display system of claim 38, wherein said future web page is retrievable via said hyperlink.
  - 40. The display system of claim 37, wherein said room includes a floor having web browsing indicia rendered thereon.
  - 41. The display system of claim 37, wherein said room includes a floor having an application program embedded therein capable of receiving data from a cut-and-paste operation.
  - 42. The display system of claim 37, wherein said room is navigable in said three-dimensional space.
  - 43. The display system of claim 37, wherein when a user selects said previous web page on said first wall, said previous web page is rendered on said second wall thereby becoming a new current web page.
  - 44. The display system of claim 43, wherein after said user selects said previous web page on said first wall, said current web page is rendered on said first wall thereby becoming a new previous web page.
  - 45. The display system of claim 37, wherein when a user selects said future web page on said third wall, said future web page is rendered on said second wall thereby becoming a new current web page.
  - 46. The display system of claim 45, wherein after said user selects said future web page on said third wall, said current web page is rendered on said first wall thereby becoming a new previous web page.
  - 47. The display system of claim 45, wherein after said user selects said future web page on said third wall, a new future web page is rendered on said third wall, said new future web page accessed via a hyperlink in said future web page.

48. An apparatus for web browsing comprising:
- a computer;
  
  a web browser operating on said computer, said web browser including a first instance of a web browsing engine that renders a past web page in a first panel, a second instance of a web browsing engine that renders a current web page in a second panel, and a third instance of a web browsing engine that renders a future web page in a third panel; and
  
  a trimonitor including a first display device portion that displays said first panel, a second display device portion that displays said second panel, and a third display device portion that displays said third panel.

49. A method for bookmarking web pages in a web browser comprising:
- storing a bookmark for a scene rendered by the web browser, said scene including a first web page and a second web page, said bookmark including a reference to said first web page and a reference to said second web page;
  
  selecting said stored bookmark; and
  
  recalling said scene by rendering said first web page using a first web browsing engine and by rendering said second page using a second web browsing engine.

- - 50. The method of claim 49, wherein said second web browsing engine is an second instance of said first web browsing engine.
  - 60. The method of claim 49, wherein said first web page and said second web page are contemporaneously displayed in said scene.

51. A method for browsing web pages comprising:
- requesting first web page data from a source of web page data;
  
  rendering a first web page in a first panel using said first web page data and a first instance of a web browsing engine;
  
  requesting second web page data in response to a user action;
  
  rendering a second web page in said first panel using said second web page data and a second instance of said web browsing engine; and
  
  contemporaneously displaying said rendered first web page in a second panel.

- - 52. The method of claim 51, wherein said contemporaneously displaying said rendered first web page in said second panel comprises rendering said first web page as a thumbnail image in said second panel.

53. A display system including at least one display device on which is rendered a graphic user interface, the graphical user interface comprising:
- a browsing space having a first panel and a plurality of second panels,wherein said first panel includes a first web page rendered thereon using a first instance of a web browsing engine, said first web page including a plurality of hyperlinks; and
  
  wherein each of said plurality of second panels includes a respective second web page rendered thereon using at least a second instance of said web browsing engine, at least one of said respective second web pages retrievable via a corresponding one of said plurality of hyperlinks.

- - 54. The display system of claim 53, wherein said first panel and at least one of said plurality of second panels are contemporaneously displayed in said browsing space.
  - 55. The display system of claim 54, wherein said browsing space further comprises a plurality of third panels, and wherein each of said plurality of third panels includes a respective third web page rendered thereon.
  - 56. The display system of claim 54, wherein as least one of said plurality of second panels includes a sticky web page that remains in said at least one of said plurality of second panels in response to a change in a web page rendered in said first panel.
  - 57. The display system of claim 54, wherein as least one of said plurality of second panels includes a sticky web page that remains in said at least one of said plurality of second panels in response to a change in a web page rendered in other ones of said plurality of second panels.
  - 58. The display system of claim 55, wherein as least one of said plurality of third panels includes a sticky web page that remains in said at least one of said plurality of third panels in response to a change in a web page rendered in said first panel.
  - 59. The display system of claim 55, wherein as least one of said plurality of third panels includes a sticky web page that remains in said at least one of said plurality of third panels in response to a change in a web page rendered in other ones of said plurality of third panels.

61. A computer-readable storage medium storing software instructions that cause a computer to perform computer operations, the computer operations comprising:
- rendering a first web page in a first panel from first web page data using a first instance of a web browsing engine;
  
  locating a reference to second web page data in said first web page data;
  
  automatically requesting said second web page data using said located reference; and
  
  rendering a second web page in a second panel from second web page data using a second instance of said web browsing engine.
