calibrating operating parameters of the optical disk drive, the optical disk drive including a digital servo system, to form calibrated parameters;

storing the calibrated parameters; and

Abstract

A method of storing calibrated optical parameters is presented. In some embodiments, calibrated optical parameters are stored in place of stored parameters. In some embodiments, averages between the calibrated operating parameters and stored optical parameters are stored. In other embodiments, the stored optical parameters are allowed to vary only by a maximum amount. In some embodiments, if the calibrated parameters vary by more than threshold values, then the calibrated parameters are not stored.

1. A method of maintaining operating parameters for an optical disk drive, comprising:
- calibrating operating parameters of the optical disk drive, the optical disk drive including a digital servo system, to form calibrated parameters;
  
  storing the calibrated parameters; and
  
  operating the optical disk drive with the calibrated parameters.

- - 2. The method of claim 1, wherein storing the calibrated parameters includes writing parameters related to at least one of the calibrated parameters into a flash memory of the optical disk drive.
  - 3. The method of claim 1, wherein storing the calibrated parameters includes writing parameters related to at least one of the calibrated parameters onto an optical media.
  - 4. The method of claim 1, wherein storing the calibrated parameters includes comparing the calibrated parameters with previously stored calibrated parameters;
    - and recording the calibrated parameters if changes between the calibrated parameters and the previously stored calibrated parameters are below threshold values.
  - 5. The method of claim 4, further including recording the previously stored calibrated parameters adjusted by a maximum value if changes between the calibrated parameters and the previously stored calibrated parameters are above the threshold values.
  - 6. The method of claim 1, wherein storing the calibrated parameters includes averaging the calibrated parameters with previously stored calibrated parameters and recording the average.
  - 7. The method of claim 1, wherein calibrating optical parameters includes calibrating the optical parameters over a plurality of zones on an optical media.
  - 8. The method of claim 1, wherein calibrating optical parameters includes calibrating the optical parameters over a plurality of media types on an optical media.
  - 9. The method of claim 5, wherein the plurality of media types includes a writeable type.
  - 10. The method of claim 5, wherein the plurality of media types includes a premastered type.
  - 11. The method of claim 1, wherein calibrating optical parameters includes calibrating the optical parameters under a plurality of operating conditions.
  - 12. The method of claim 8, wherein the plurality of operating conditions includes a read operating condition and a write operating condition.
  - 14. The drive of claim 13, further including a flash memory and wherein the at least one processor stores parameters related to at least one of the calibrated parameters into the flash memory.
  - 15. The drive of claim 13, wherein the at least one processor stores parameters related to at least one of the calibrated parameters onto an optical media.
  - 16. The drive of claim 13, wherein the at least one processor stores averages between the calibrated parameters and previously stored parameters.
  - 17. The drive of claim 13, wherein the at least one processor stores the calibrated parameters if the calibrated parameters differ from previously stored parameters by less than a threshold value.
  - 18. The drive of claim 13, wherein the at least one processor stores previously stored parameters adjusted by maximum values if the calibrated parameters differ from previously stored parameters by a threshold value.

13. An optical disk drive system, comprising:
- an optical pick-up unit;
  
  an analog processor coupled to receive signals from detectors in the optical pick-up unit and provide digital signals;
  
  at least one processor coupled to receive the digital signals, the processor calculating a control signal; and
  
  a driver coupled to control a position of the optical pick-up unit in response to the control signal, wherein the at least one processor executes an algorithm that calibrates operating parameters for the optical drive to form calibrated parameters; and
  
  stores the calibrated parameters.

19. An optical disk drive, comprising:
- means for calibrating operating parameters to form calibrated parameters;
  
  means for storing the calibrated parameters; and
  
  means for operating the optical disk drive with the calibrated parameters.
