A device that is capable of managing multiple telephones in a network identified by a common phone number, the device comprising logic configured to generate a change request that assigns services associated with the common phone number to a first telephone, wherein the change request comprises a first unique identifier that identifies the first telephone and the common phone number that identifies the network, the first identifier being different than the common phone number.

A method of assigning a common phone number among multiple telephones, the method comprising generating a change request that assigns a phone number associated with a first telephone to a second telephone, wherein the change request comprises a first unique identifier that identifies the first telephone and a second unique identifier that identifies the second telephone and wherein the first and second unique identifiers are different than the common phone number.

An apparatus that is capable of providing selected services associated with a common network number to selected devices accessible through the common network number, the apparatus comprising logic configured to enable a selected service associated with the common network number on a first device identifiable by a first unique identifier, where the first unique identifier and the common network number are different.

A method of managing a common network number among multiple devices, the method comprising transmitting a change request that assigns functionality to the common network number from a first device to a second device, wherein the change request comprises a first unique identifier that identifies the first device and a second unique identifier that identifies the second device and wherein the first and second unique identifiers are different than the common network number.

6. A telephone that is capable of sharing a common phone number with other telephones, the telephone comprising:

a computer-readable medium comprising a unique identifier that uniquely identifies a telephone that has a telephone number associated therewith, wherein the unique identifier is not the telephone number; and

10. A method of linking a common phone number with a telephone, the method comprising:

receiving a signaling word from a telephone wherein the signaling word comprises the common phone number, a unique identifier that uniquely identifies the telephone, and payload data requesting a service be available to the telephone; and

a computer-readable medium comprising a unique identifier that uniquely identifies the telephone wherein the unique identifier is not a telephone number;
a user interface wherein a user is capable of specifying a change request that assigns to the telephone a phone number shared with another telephone; and
logic configured to format a signaling word wherein the signaling word comprises the first unique identifier and payload data representative of the change request.

17. A method of sharing a network number with multiple devices, the method comprising:

displaying a user interface on a first device wherein a user is capable of specifying a change request that assigns to the first device a network number associated with a second device; and
generating the change request with the first device wherein the change request comprises a first unique identifier that uniquely identifies the first device and a second unique identifier that uniquely identifies a second device wherein the first and second unique identifiers are not the network number.
