MEDICAL DEVICE WITH SLOTTED MEMORY METAL TUBE
First Claim
1. A medical device comprising at least one monolithic memory metal tube programmed for an effect selected from the group of effects consisting of memory effect and superelasticity and having in at least one section thereof a plurality of slots such that the slotted section is capable of expansion and contraction, wherein the slotted section is free of interior structure that is axially movable within the slotted section and engageable with the memory metal tube to expand and/or contract the slotted section.

Abstract
A series of medical instruments can be made with the use of shape memory tube with a transformation temperature that is above or below the ambient temperature. In the first case, the material behaves with the shape memory effect and in the second case the behavior is superelastic. The wall of the tube has been provided with a plurality of slots in specific places, often near or at the distal end of the instrument, and in specific arrangements which allow local variations in diameter, shape, and/or length. These variations can either be caused by the memory effect during temperature change or by superelastic behavior during change of the mechanical influences on the memory metal by the surrounding material.

15. A medical assembly for treatment in a cavity of a patient, said assembly comprising:
-
an outer elongated tubular member;
at least one memory metal tube programmed for an effect selected from the group of effects consisting of shape memory and superelasticity, said memory metal tube having in at least one section thereof a pattern of slots forming a slotted section capable of expansion and contraction between a programmed expanded state and a constrained contracted state;
wherein the outer tubular member is adapted to be slidably positioned over the memory metal tube whereby the outer tubular member and memory metal tube are adapted for relative axial movement therebetween from a first relative position to a second relative position;
wherein the outer tubular member, in the first relative position, surrounds at least the slotted section of the memory metal tube to hold the slotted section in the constrained contracted state for delivery of the slotted section to the cavity; and
wherein the outer tubular member, in the second relative position, is removed from surrounding the slotted section of the memory metal tube to permit the slotted section to expand to the programmed expanded state. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18)

19. A medical device for plugging a cavity having a constricted portion between distal and proximal portions of larger dimension than the constricted portion, the device comprising:
-
a monolithic memory metal tube having a distal end section, a proximal end section and a center section therebetween, the monolithic memory metal tube programmed for an effect selected from the group of effects consisting of memory effect and superelasticity, and a plurality of slots in each of the distal and proximal end sections such that each are expandable, the expandable distal end section being expandable in the distal portion of the cavity, the expandable proximal end section being expandable in the proximal portion of the cavity, and the center section being positionable therebetween inside the constricted portion of the cavity. - View Dependent Claims (20, 21)
