1. A method of operating a data communication network comprising a plurality of communication devices, the method comprising:

broadcasting from a first communication device to a second communication device, said broadcasting comprising transmission of a request signal including a request for an allocation of time to transmit an amount of data to a third communication device, said broadcasting further comprising transmission of ID information identifying the first communication device and ID information identifying the third communication device;

receiving a grant signal broadcast by the second communication device, said grant signal comprising an allocation of time to the first communication device to transmit data;

transmitting the data from the first communication device to the second communication device;

transmitting the data from the second communication device to the third communication device;

transmitting an acknowledgement signal from the third communication device to the second communication device; and

transmitting a subsequent acknowledgement signal from the second communication device to the first communication device.

Abstract

A communication system is provided for communication between network nodes and a communication controller. In the network, a request signal is transmitted from a first node to the communication controller to allow communication with a second node. After grant of the request by the controller, the first node sends its data through the communication controller to the second node. The second node sends an acknowledgement through the communication controller to the first node once the data message is received. The first node then acknowledges receipt of the acknowledgment by the second node.

1. A method of operating a data communication network comprising a plurality of communication devices, the method comprising:
- broadcasting from a first communication device to a second communication device, said broadcasting comprising transmission of a request signal including a request for an allocation of time to transmit an amount of data to a third communication device, said broadcasting further comprising transmission of ID information identifying the first communication device and ID information identifying the third communication device;
  
  receiving a grant signal broadcast by the second communication device, said grant signal comprising an allocation of time to the first communication device to transmit data;
  
  transmitting the data from the first communication device to the second communication device;
  
  transmitting the data from the second communication device to the third communication device;
  
  transmitting an acknowledgement signal from the third communication device to the second communication device; and

- - 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said first communication device and said third communication device comprise nodes, and wherein said second communication device is a communication controller.
  - 3. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one communication device from the plurality of communication devices, including the first communication device, the second communication device and the third communication device comprise multiple antennas.
  - 4. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one communication device from said plurality of communication devices comprise a first communication controller, said first communication controller transmitting on at least one frequency.
  - 5. The method of claim 4, wherein at least one communication device from said plurality of communication devices comprise a first node, said first node transmitting on at least a second frequency.
  - 6. The method of claim 2, wherein the data transmitted by the second communication device may be routed to the third communication device via at least one additional communication device including at least a fourth communication device.
  - 7. The method of claim 6, wherein said fourth communication device comprises a communication controller.
  - 8. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality of communication devices can simultaneously transmit and receive.
  - 9. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality communication devices can simultaneously transmit over multiple antennas.
  - 10. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality communication devices can simultaneously receive over multiple antennas.
  - 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the second communication device executes at least one loop which involves checking to determine whether any data is being received.
  - 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the second communication device executes at least one loop which involves checking to determine whether any data is being transmitted by the first communication device.
  - 13. The method of claim 1, wherein the grant signal broadcast from the second communication device is broadcast from the second communication device along with operation code information which informs at least a fourth communication device from the plurality of communication devices to turn off its transmitter.

The method of claim 12, wherein the grant signal broadcast from the second communication device is broadcast from the second communication device along with operation code information which informs at a fourth communication device from the plurality of communication devices to turn on its transmitter.
  - 15. The method of claim 14, wherein a period of time between the execution of the turn on and a turn off command may vary for each of the plurality of communication devices.
  - 16. The method of claim 1, wherein the third communication device may be an ultimate destination node;
    - wherein said ID information identifying the third communication device comprises addressee ID information in the packet header;
      
      wherein the third communication device checks to see whether the ID information of the ultimate destination node is the ID of the third communication device.
  - 17. The method of claim 1, wherein the first communication device utilizes at least one channel to transmit data in said allocation of time.
  - 18. The method of claim 17, wherein said at least one channel comprises at least one frequency.
  - 19. The method of claim 18, wherein said at least one frequency may comprise a range of frequencies over a series of contiguous slots within the allocation of time.
  - 20. The method of claim 18, wherein said at least one frequency may comprise a list of frequencies over a series of contiguous slots within the allocation of time.
  - 21. The method of claim 1, wherein the first node may retransmit the data in absence of the acknowledgement signal.
  - 22. The method of claim 1, wherein the request signal is a random request signal.
  - 23. The method of claim 1, wherein the second communication device transmits power level adjustment information to at least one communication device from the plurality of communication devices, said power level adjustment information comprising information related to information concerning receiver power level adjustment information.
  - 24. The method of claim 2, wherein the communication controller includes at least one transceiver which can transmit and receive at a lower cellular frequency.
  - 25. The method of claim 24, wherein said lower cellular frequency is common to at least some of the communication controllers.
  - 26. The method of claim 25, wherein the at least some of said communication controllers use a unique clocking signal within the lower cellular frequency.
  - 27. The method of claim 1, wherein the first communication device transmits data to the second communication device in the form of communication packets which include the ID of the first communication device as the sender ID, and wherein the second communication device transmits the data to the third communication device in the form of communication packets which include the ID of the second communication device as the sender ID.
  - 28. The method of claim 1, wherein the first communication device includes a touch screen.

29. A method of operating a data communication network comprising a plurality of communication devices, the plurality of communication devices being comprised of at least a first node with multiple antennas and at least a first communication controller, the method comprising:
- receiving a request to transmit data from the first node;
  
  transmitting a downstream signal from the first communication controller to the plurality of communication devices including the first node, said first signal granting the first node permission to transmit the data in at least one upstream signal to the communication controller;
  
  receiving the upstream data signal from the first node, wherein said data transmitted by the first node to the communication controller is relayed from the communication controller to at least a second node; and
  
  transmitting a subsequent downstream signal from the communication controller to the first node.

- - 30. The method of claim 29, wherein the subsequent downstream signal from the communication controller comprises acknowledgement information.
  - 31. The method of claim 29, wherein the request from the first node comprises a request for allocation of time to transmit the data.

  - 33. The method of claim 29, wherein said subsequent downstream signal grants at least one slot of time within at least one frequency to at least the first node to transmit the data.
  - 34. The method of claim 33, wherein said at least one frequency comprises a range of frequencies, and wherein said slot of time is variable.
  - 35. The method of claim 33, wherein said at least one frequency comprises a range of frequencies, and wherein said slot of time is fixed.

The method of claim 29, wherein the subsequent downstream signal from the communication controller in response to said request signal is broadcasted to the plurality of communication devices including the first node, wherein said subsequent downstream signal includes information relating to an assignment of a unique slot of time for each of the plurality of communication devices.
  - 37. The method of claim 29, wherein the subsequent downstream signal from the communication controller includes power level adjustment information related to the receiver power level adjustment of at least the first node.
