generating a random access message using the selected one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences; and

transmitting the random access message to the radio base station.

Abstract

The technology described in this case facilitates random access by a user terminal with a radio base station. A user terminal determines one of a first type of uplink scrambling sequences and generates a random access message using the determined one of the first type of uplink scrambling sequences. The random access message is transmitted to the base station. The user terminal receives from the base station a second, different type of uplink scrambling sequence and uses it for subsequent communication with the radio base station. For example, the first uplink scrambling sequences may be specifically associated with the radio base station'"'"'s cell area or a random access radio channel associated with the radio base station, but they are not specifically assigned to any user terminal, and the second uplink scrambling sequence may be selected from a second set of uplink scrambling sequences specifically assignable to individual user terminals.

1. A method implemented in a user terminal for accessing a radio channel, comprising:
- detecting a first set of uplink scrambling sequences specifically associated with a radio base station'"'"'s cell area or random access channel but which are not specifically assigned to any user terminal;
  
  determining a selected one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences;
  
  generating a random access message using the selected one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences; and
  
  transmitting the random access message to the radio base station.

- - 2. The method in claim 1, further comprising:
    - after transmitting the random access request message, receiving from the radio base station a user terminal-specific uplink scrambling sequence selected from a second set of uplink scrambling sequences specifically assignable to user terminals,wherein the user terminal uses the selected user terminal-specific uplink scrambling sequence for subsequent communication with the radio base station.
  - 3. The method in claim 1, wherein the generating step includes scrambling information in the random access message using the selected one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences.
  - 4. The method in claim 3, wherein the transmitting includes modulating the scrambled random access message and mapping the modulated message to a radio channel resource.
  - 5. The method in claim 1, wherein the first set of uplink scrambling sequences are cell-specific scrambling sequences corresponding to a cell associated with the radio base station.
  - 6. The method in claim 1, further comprising:
    - sending a first random access request message including a random access preamble to the radio base station using a random access channel radio resource;
      
      receiving a second random access response message from the radio base station indicating a timing change, an identified radio resource, and a user terminal identifier;
      
      adjusting a timing at the user terminal for transmitting signals to the radio base station based on information received in the random access response message;
      
      based on the adjusted timing, transmitting a third message corresponding to the generated random access message including the user terminal identity to the radio base station over the identified radio resource, wherein the third message is scrambled using the selected one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences; and
      
      receiving a fourth contention resolution message from the radio base station.
  - 7. The method in claim 6, wherein:
    - the first set of uplink scrambling sequences are mapped to corresponding random access preamble sequences, and the method further comprises;
      
      selecting one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences based on the random access preamble included in the first random access request message and the mapping.
  - 8. The method in claim 6, wherein the first set of uplink scrambling sequences are mapped to corresponding user terminal identifiers, and the method further comprises:
    - selecting one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences based on the user terminal identifier included in the second random access response message and the mapping.
  - 9. The method in claim 6, wherein the first set of uplink scrambling sequences are mapped to corresponding radio resources used for transmitting the random access request message, and the method further comprises:
    - selecting one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences based on the random access channel radio resource used to send a first random access request message including a random access preamble to the radio base station and the mapping.
  - 10. The method in claim 1, further comprising:
    - selecting one of a first set of uplink reference sequences specifically associated with a radio base station'"'"'s cell area or random access channel but which are not specifically assigned to any user terminal;
      
      generating a random access message using the selected one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences and the selected one of the first set of uplink reference sequences; and
      
      transmitting the random access message to the radio base station.

11. A method implemented in a base station for responding to user terminals requesting service from the base station over a radio channel, comprising:
- broadcasting a first set of uplink scrambling sequences specifically associated with a radio base station'"'"'s cell area or random access channel but which are not specifically assigned to any user terminal;
  
  receiving from one of the user terminals a random access message using the one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences;
  
  transmitting to the one user terminal a user terminal-specific uplink scrambling sequence selected from a second set of uplink scrambling sequences specifically assignable to user terminals; and
  
  receiving a subsequent communication from the one user terminal scrambled with the selected user terminal-specific uplink scrambling sequence for subsequent communication with the radio base station.

- - 12. The method in claim 11, further comprising:
    - receiving a first random access request message from the one user terminal including a random access preamble using a random access channel radio resource;
      
      transmitting a second random access response message to the one user terminal indicating a timing change, an identified radio resource, and a user terminal identifier;
      
      receiving over the identified radio resource a third message corresponding to the generated random access message, wherein the third message includes the user terminal identity and is scrambled using the selected one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences; and
      
      transmitting a fourth contention resolution message to the one user terminal.

13. A user terminal for requesting service from a base station having a cell area where the base station offers radio communications service, comprisingelectronic processing circuitry configured to:
- determine one of a first type of uplink scrambling sequences, andgenerate a random access message using the determined one of the first type of uplink scrambling sequences, andradio transmission circuitry for transmitting the random access message to the radio base station, andradio receiving circuitry for receiving from the radio base station a second different type of uplink scrambling sequence,wherein the electronic processing circuitry is configured to use the second different type of uplink scrambling sequence for subsequent communication with the radio base station.

The user terminal in claim 13, wherein the first type of uplink scrambling sequences are specifically associated with the radio base station'"'"'s cell area or a random access radio channel associated with the radio base station but which are not specifically assigned to any user terminal, and the second different type of uplink scrambling sequence is selected from a set of uplink scrambling sequences specifically assignable to user terminals.
  - 15. The user terminal in claim 13, wherein the electronic processing circuitry is configured to scramble information in the random access message using the determined one of the first type of uplink scrambling sequences.
  - 16. The user terminal in claim 15, wherein the transmitter is configured to modulate the scrambled random access message and map the modulated message to a radio channel resource.
  - 17. The user terminal in claim 13, wherein:
    - the transmitter is configured to transmit a first random access request message including a random access preamble to the radio base station using a random access channel radio resource;
      
      the receiver is configured to receive a second random access response message from the radio base station indicating a timing change, an identified radio resource, and a user terminal identifier;
      
      the electronic processing circuitry is configured to adjust a timing at the user terminal for transmitting signals to the radio base station based on information received in the random access response message;
      
      based on the adjusted timing, the transmitter is configured to transmit a third message corresponding to the generated random access message including the user terminal identity to the radio base station over the identified radio resource, wherein the third message is scrambled using the selected one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences; and
      
      the receiver is configured to receive a fourth contention resolution message from the radio base station.
  - 18. The user terminal in claim 17, wherein the electronic processing circuitry is configured to:
    - map the first set of uplink scrambling sequences to corresponding random access preamble sequences, andselect one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences based on the random access preamble included in the first random access request message and the mapping.
  - 19. The user terminal in claim 17, wherein the electronic processing circuitry is configured to:
    - map the first set of uplink scrambling sequences to corresponding user terminal identifiers, andselect one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences based on the user terminal identifier included in the second random access response message and the mapping.
  - 20. The user terminal in claim 17, wherein the electronic processing circuitry is configured to:
    - map the first set of uplink scrambling sequences to corresponding radio resources used for transmitting the random access request message, andselect one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences based on the random access channel radio resource used to send a first random access request message including a random access preamble to the radio base station and the mapping.
  - 21. The user terminal in claim 17, wherein the electronic processing circuitry is configured to:
    - select one of a first set of uplink reference sequences specifically associated with a radio base station'"'"'s cell area or random access channel but which are not specifically assigned to any user terminal, andgenerating a random access message using the selected one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences and the selected one of the first set of uplink reference sequences, andwherein the transmitter is configured to transmit the random access message to the radio base station.
  - 22. The user terminal in claim 17, wherein the user terminal is configured to communicate with a long term evolution (LTE) radio communications network, and the transmitter is configured to transmit the first random access request message over a random access channel (RACH) and the third message over an uplink-shared channel (UL_SCH).
  - 23. The user terminal in claim 22, wherein the user terminal identifier is a temporary user terminal identifier used until a radio network terminal identifier (RNTI) is assigned to the user terminal.

24. A radio base station for responding to user terminals requesting service from the base station over a radio channel, comprising circuitry configured to:
- broadcast a first set of uplink scrambling sequences specifically associated with a radio base station'"'"'s cell area or random access channel but which are not specifically assigned to any user terminal;
  
  receive from one of the user terminals a random access message using the one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences;
  
  transmit to the one user terminal a user terminal-specific uplink scrambling sequence selected from a second set of uplink scrambling sequences specifically assignable to user terminals; and
  
  receive a subsequent communication from the one user terminal scrambled with the selected user terminal-specific uplink scrambling sequence for subsequent communication with the radio base station.

- - 25. The radio base station in claim 24, wherein the circuitry is further configured to:
    - receive a first random access request message from the one user terminal including a random access preamble using a random access channel radio resource;
      
      transmit a second random access response message to the one user terminal indicating a timing change, an identified radio resource, and a user terminal identifier;
      
      receive over the identified radio resource a third message corresponding to the generated random access message, wherein the third message includes the user terminal identity and is scrambled using the selected one of the first set of uplink scrambling sequences; and
      
      transmit a fourth contention resolution message to the one user terminal.
  - 26. The radio base station in claim 25, wherein the base station is part of a long term evolution (LTE) radio communications network, the first random access request message is received over a random access channel (RACH) and the third message is received over an uplink-shared channel (UL_SCH).
  - 27. The radio base station in claim 26, wherein the user terminal identifier is a temporary user terminal identifier used until a radio network terminal identifier (RNTI) is assigned to the user terminal.
