1. A system for enabling insertion of content into a webpage, the system comprising:

at least one server for providing information to generate a webpage containing at least one vacancy, the at least one vacancy being associated with one or more attributes; and

at least one database for storing information related to at least one unit of digital content, the at least one unit of digital content being associated with one or more attributes;

wherein the at least one server determines the at least one unit of digital content to fill the at least one vacancy by comparing the one or more attribute associated with the at least one vacancy with the one or more attributes associated with the at least one unit of digital content.

Abstract

Methods, systems, and articles of manufacture consistent with the present invention provide an electronic marketplace that matches units of content from secondary content providers with suitable vacancies from primary content providers. Vacancies may constitute, or be included in, any digital transmission containers, such as a television or radio programming, web pages, and the like. Specifically, the electronic marketplace automatically matches content offered by secondary content providers with vacancies offered by primary content providers thus filling the vacancies in these containers through a real-time content trading, placement, and distribution system. To do so, attributes associated with the vacancies and with units of secondary content are used to trade and match suitable vacancies with suitable content. This invention enables both secondary content owners and vacancy owners (primary content providers) to obtain the full commercial benefit of their secondary content and containers.

  - 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one unit of digital content is an advertisement, a virtual storefront, or syndicated content.
  - 8. The system of claim 1 further comprising vacancy editor software.
  - 9. The system of claim 8, wherein the vacancy editor software enables a vacancy to be graphically defined.
  - 10. The system of claim 8, wherein the vacancy editor software enables inputting of one or more attributes related to the at least one vacancy.
  - 11. The system of claim 8 wherein the vacancy editor software operates on a host server.
  - 12. The system of claim 8, wherein the vacancy editor software operates on a service provider server.
  - 13. The system of claim 1, wherein the one or more attributes of the at least one vacancy is at least one of a physical size of the vacancy, a location of the vacancy, a time qualifier of the vacancy, a date qualifier of the vacancy, and a classification of the vacancy.
  - 14. The system of claim 1 further comprising a server configured to log completed transactions.
  - 15. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one unit of digital content is associated with a snap-in.
  - 16. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one unit of digital content to be inserted into the at least one vacancy is selected based on the results of a bidding process.

17. A method for enabling insertion of content into a webpage, the method comprising:
- providing, by at least one server, information to generate a webpage containing at least one vacancy;
  
  storing, by at least one database, information related to at least one unit of digital content, the at least one unit of digital content being associated with one or more attributes; and
  
  determining, by the at least one server, the at least one unit of digital content to fill the at least one vacancy by comparing one or more attributes associated with the at least one vacancy with the one or more attributes associated with the at least one unit of digital content.

26. A system for enabling insertion of content into a webpage upon request from at least one device, the system comprising:
- at least one server for providing information to generate a webpage containing at least one vacancy; and
  
  at least one database for storing information related to at least one snap-in, the at least one snap-in being associated with one or more attributes;
  
  wherein the at least one server determines the at least one snap-in to be inserted within the at least one vacancy by comparing one or more attributes associated with the at least one vacancy with the one or more attributes associated with the at least one snap-in.

  - 29. The system of claim 26, wherein the at least one snap-in comprises a software agent implementing in a method of an object.
  - 30. The system of claim 29, wherein the software agent assembles digital content dynamically.
  - 31. The system of claim 29, wherein the software agent mediates trading of at least one of the at least one vacancy and the at least one snap-in.
  - 32. The system of claim 26, wherein the one or more attributes of the at least one vacancy determine how and when the at least one vacancy will be filled and the one or more attributes of the at least one snap-in determine how and when the at least one snap-in will be used.

  - 34. The system of claim 26, wherein a bidding or trading strategy is executed for the at least one vacancy or the one or more attributes of the at least one vacancy.

  - 38. The system of claim 26, wherein the system provides a marketplace for matching the at least one snap-in with the at least one vacancy.
  - 39. The system of claim 26 further comprising a trading engine which executes transactions between providers of the at least one snap-in and providers of the at least one vacancy.

42. A method for enabling insertion of content into a webpage upon request from at least one device, the method comprising:
- providing, by at least one server, information to generate a webpage containing at least one vacancy, the at least one vacancy being associated with one or more attributes;
  
  storing, by at least one database, information related to at least one snap-in, the at least one snap-in being associated with one or more attributes; and
  
  determining, by the at least one server, the at least one snap-in to be inserted within the at least one vacancy by comparing the one or more attributes associated with the at least one vacancy with the one or more attributes associated with the at least one snap-in.
