determining a set of random access identifiers;

designating at least a subset of random access identifiers from the set of random access identifiers as being allocatable random access identifiers;

selecting a first random access identifier from the subset of random access identifiers; and

assigning the first random access identifier to a subscriber station.

Abstract

Systems and methods of pre-allocating identifiers to wireless devices for use in requesting resources over a random access channel are described. A wireless communication system includes a random access channel over which wireless devices can anonymously send requests for resources. The base stations receiving and processing the anonymous requests reduces the probability of random access channel collisions and conserves the resources needed to support the anonymous requests by pre-allocating one or more identifiers to select wireless devices. The wireless devices having the pre-allocated codes can transmit a particular code over the random access channel as a request for resources that uniquely identifies the requester.

1. A method of processing random access identifiers, the method comprising:
- determining a set of random access identifiers;
  
  designating at least a subset of random access identifiers from the set of random access identifiers as being allocatable random access identifiers;
  
  selecting a first random access identifier from the subset of random access identifiers; and
  
  assigning the first random access identifier to a subscriber station.

- - 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining capabilities of the subscriber station.
  - 3. The method of claim 2, wherein determining the capabilities of the subscriber station comprises determining whether the subscriber station supports pre-allocated random access identifiers.
  - 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring the random access channel for a presence of any one of the subset of random access identifiers.
  - 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising selecting a second random access identifier from the subset of random access identifiers and assigning the second random access identifier to the subscriber station.
  - 6. The method of claim 5, further comprising designating a usage type to at least one of the first random access identifier and the second random access identifier.
  - 7. The method of claim 5, further comprising attaching a semantic to at least one of the first random access identifier and the second random access identifier.
  - 8. The method of claim 6, further comprising attaching a semantic to at least one of the first random access identifier and the second random access identifier.
  - 9. The method of claim 7, wherein the semantic comprises one of a class of service or number of bytes.
  - 10. The method of claim 8, wherein the semantic comprises one of a class of service or number of bytes.
  - 11. The method of claim 6, wherein the usage type is selected from a list comprising an initial ranging, a periodic ranging, a bandwidth request, and a handover.
  - 12. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the set of random access identifiers comprises generating the set of random access identifiers based on a generator polynomial and a cell identifier.
  - 13. The method of claim 1, wherein assigning the first random access identifier to the subscriber station comprises:
    - determining an indication of mobility of the subscriber station; and
      
      assigning the first random access identifier based on the indication of mobility.
  - 14. The method of claim 1, wherein assigning the first random access identifier to the subscriber station comprises:
    - determining a characteristic of a communication link with the subscriber station; and
      
      assigning the first random access identifier based on the characteristic of the communication link.
