Abstract

Video signals for a mobile terminal are converted to accommodate reproduction by an alternative display terminal. The video signal is processed to provide a converted video signal appropriate for an alternative display terminal that is separate from the mobile terminal. This converted video signal is then provided for the alternative display terminal to accommodate the corresponding video display on a screen provided by the alternative (e.g., external) display terminal.

3. A cellular phone comprising:
- an input interface configured to receive a multimedia signal appropriate for displaying a multimedia content on the cellular phone, wherein the multimedia signal is a compressed digital signal;
  
  at least one processing unit configured to perform a processing of the multimedia signal,wherein the processing of the multimedia signal comprises decompressing the compressed digital signal to a decompressed digital signal,wherein the processing of the multimedia signal further comprises encoding the decompressed digital signal to produce an encoded digital signal, andwherein the encoded digital signal comprises a decompressed high definition digital video signal; and
  
  a high definition digital output interface configured to interface with a cable to transmit the encoded digital signal to a high definition digital television through the cable and to receive power from the high definition digital television through the cable;
  
  wherein the cellular phone is configured to receive the power from the high definition digital television through the high definition digital output interface while the encoded digital signal is transmitted to the high definition digital television through the high definition digital output interface.

  - 6. The cellular phone of claim 3 further comprising a decoder, wherein the decoder is configured to perform said decompressing the compressed digital signal to the decompressed digital signal;
    - and wherein the apparatus further comprises an encoder, wherein the encoder is configured to perform said encoding the decompressed signal to produce the encoded digital signal for transmission to the high definition digital television; and
      
      wherein a maximum throughput rate for transmitting the encoded digital signal through the high definition digital output interface is at least 10 Gigabits/second.
  - 7. The cellular phone of claim 6, wherein the power is received during the processing of the multimedia signal;
    - and wherein the power received contributes power for said processing of the multimedia signal to avoid exhaustion of an internal battery power supply of the cellular phone.
  - 8. The cellular phone of claim 7, wherein the maximum throughput rate supports said transmitting the encoded digital signal in real time.
  - 9. The cellular phone of claim 7, wherein the high definition digital output interface is a mobile high definition interface;
    - and wherein the multimedia content is one or more of the following;
      
      a video game, GPS, a video on demand, a 3D image, a high definition television (HDTV), a video, and a video conference.
  - 10. The cellular phone of claim 3, wherein the high definition digital output interface is a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI).
  - 11. The cellular phone of claim 7, wherein the multimedia signal is received through a wireless local area network.
  - 12. The cellular phone of claim 7, wherein the multimedia signal is received through a cellular communication network.

13. A cellular phone comprising:
- an input interface configured to receive a multimedia signal appropriate for displaying a multimedia content on the cellular phone, wherein the multimedia signal is a compressed digital signal;
  
  at least one processing unit configured to perform a processing of the multimedia signal,wherein the processing of the multimedia signal comprises decompressing the compressed digital signal to a decompressed digital signal,wherein the processing of the multimedia signal further comprises encoding the decompressed digital signal to produce an encoded digital signal, andwherein the encoded digital signal comprises a decompressed high definition digital video signal; and
  
  a high definition digital output interface configured to interface with a cable to transmit the encoded digital signal to a high definition digital television through the cable and to receive power from the high definition digital television through the cable;
  
  wherein the cellular phone is configured to receive the power from the high definition digital television through the high definition digital output interface.

  - 18. The cellular phone of claim 17 further comprising a decoder, wherein the decoder is configured to perform said decompressing the compressed digital signal to the decompressed digital signal;
    - and wherein the apparatus further comprises an encoder, wherein the encoder is configured to perform said encoding the decompressed digital signal to produce the encoded digital signal for transmission to the high definition digital television; and
      
      wherein a maximum throughput rate for transmitting the encoded digital signal through the high definition digital output interface is at least 10 Gigabits/second.
  - 19. The cellular phone of claim 18, wherein the maximum throughput rate supports said transmitting the encoded digital signal in real time.

20. A method for processing signals by a cellular phone, the method comprising:
- receiving a multimedia signal appropriate for displaying a multimedia content on the cellular phone, wherein the multimedia signal is a compressed digital signal and the multimedia signal is received by the cellular phone;
  
  processing the multimedia signal by the cellular phone,wherein said processing the multimedia signal comprises decompressing the compressed digital signal to a decompressed digital signal,wherein said processing the multimedia signal further comprises encoding the decompressed digital signal to produce an encoded digital signal, andwherein the encoded digital signal comprises a decompressed high definition digital video signal;
  
  transmitting the encoded digital signal to a high definition digital television through a high definition digital output interface of the cellular phone; and
  
  receiving, by the cellular phone, power from the high definition digital television through the high definition digital output interface;
  
  wherein the high definition digital output interface is configured to interface with a cable to transmit the encoded digital signal from the cellular phone to the high definition digital television through the cable and to receive the power from the high definition digital television through the cable.

- an input interface configured to receive a multimedia signal through a wireless local area network,wherein the multimedia signal is a compressed digital signal;
  
  at least one processing unit configured to perform a processing of the multimedia signal,wherein the processing of the multimedia signal comprises decompressing the compressed digital signal to a decompressed digital signal,wherein the processing of the multimedia signal further comprises encoding the decompressed digital signal to produce an encoded digital signal, andwherein the encoded digital signal comprises a decompressed high definition digital video signal; and
  
  a high definition multimedia interface configured to transmit the encoded digital signal to a high definition digital television;
  
  wherein the apparatus is configured to interface with a cable to receive power from the high definition digital television through the cable while the encoded digital signal is transmitted to the high definition digital television through the high definition multimedia interface; and
  
  wherein the power received contributes power for said processing of the multimedia signal.

  - 26. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the maximum throughput rate supports said transmitting the encoded digital signal in real time.
  - 27. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the multimedia signal is received from a mobile terminal through the wireless local area network;
    - and wherein the apparatus is an intermediate device between the mobile terminal and the high definition digital television; and
      
      wherein the mobile terminal is a cellular phone or a personal digital assistant (PDA).
  - 28. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the input interface receives the multimedia signal after the multimedia signal is wirelessly received by the mobile terminal.
  - 29. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the maximum throughput rate supports said transmitting the encoded digital signal in real time.

30. An apparatus comprising:
- an input interface configured to receive a multimedia signal through a wireless local area network,wherein the multimedia signal is a compressed digital signal;
  
  at least one processing unit configured to perform a processing of the multimedia signal,wherein the processing of the multimedia signal comprises decompressing the compressed digital signal to a decompressed digital signal,wherein the processing of the multimedia signal further comprises encoding the decompressed digital signal to produce an encoded digital signal, andwherein the encoded digital signal comprises a decompressed high definition digital video signal; and
  
  a high definition multimedia interface configured to transmit the encoded digital signal to a high definition digital display;
  
  wherein the apparatus is configured to interface with a wired connection to receive power through the wired connection while the encoded digital signal is transmitted to the high definition digital display through the high definition multimedia interface; and
  
  wherein the power received contributes power for said processing of the multimedia signal.

  - 33. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the maximum throughput rate supports said transmitting the encoded digital signal in real time.
  - 34. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein the power is received from the high definition digital display.
  - 35. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the multimedia signal is received from a mobile terminal through the wireless local area network;
    - and wherein the apparatus is an intermediate device between the mobile terminal and the high definition digital display; and
      
      wherein the mobile terminal is a cellular phone or a personal digital assistant (PDA).
  - 36. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein the input interface receives the multimedia signal after the multimedia signal is wirelessly received by the mobile terminal.
  - 37. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein the multimedia content is one or more of the following:
    - a network game, GPS, a video on demand, a 3D image, a high definition television (HDTV), a video, and a video conference; and
      
      wherein the high definition digital display is a television.
  - 38. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein the multimedia content is one or more of the following:
    - a network game, GPS, a video on demand, a 3D image, a high definition television (HDTV), a video, and a video conference; and
      
      wherein the high definition digital display is a projector.
  - 39. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein the mobile terminal is a cellular phone and the high definition digital display is a television.
  - 40. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein the maximum throughput rate supports said transmitting the encoded digital signal in real time.
  - 41. The apparatus of claim 31 further comprising a housing having a housing interface that is configured to interface with a cellular phone, and wherein the housing is configured to provide the encoded digital signal for said transmitting through the high definition multimedia interface.

42. The apparatus of 41, wherein the housing is configured to receive the power and to provide power to the cellular phone through the housing interface.

43. A method for processing signals, the method comprising:
- receiving, by an apparatus, a multimedia signal through a wireless local area network;
  
  wherein the multimedia signal is a compressed digital signal;
  
  processing the multimedia signal by the apparatus,wherein said processing the multimedia signal comprises decompressing the compressed digital signal to a decompressed digital signal,wherein said processing the multimedia signal further comprises encoding the decompressed digital signal to produce an encoded digital signal, andwherein the encoded digital signal comprises a decompressed high definition digital video signal;
  
  transmitting the encoded digital signal to a high definition digital display through a high definition multimedia interface of the apparatus; and
  
  receiving, by the apparatus, power through a wired connection while the encoded digital signal is transmitted to the high definition digital display;
  
  wherein the power received contributes power for said processing the multimedia signal.
