Casio Computer and Wheels Sued in Empire IP Plaintiff’s Wireless Communications Campaign

Fleet Connect Solutions LLC (FCS), a plaintiff associated with Texas monetization firm Empire IP LLC, has expanded its sole litigation campaign with separate suits against Casio Computer (2:24-cv-00240), in the Eastern District of Texas, and Wheels (1:24-cv-01563), in the Northern District of Georgia. The plaintiff asserts 13 wireless communications patents in overlapping sets, each received from Intellectual Ventures LLC (IV). FCS alleges infringement through the provision of devices that support Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11ac/b/n, and/or LTE connectivity: for Casio, certain wireless label printers and smartwatches; and for Wheels, its fleet management and vehicle telematics solutions (including certain Geotab-branded products).

Empire IP Plaintiff Extends Vehicle Monitoring Campaign

OBD Sensor Solutions LLC, an entity associated with Texas monetization firm Empire IP LLC, has expanded its sole litigation campaign with a suit against Verizon (Verizon Connect, Verizon Wireless) (2:24-cv-00153) in the Eastern District of Texas. A single patent is in suit, generally related to a device for monitoring the “use and functioning” of motor vehicles through a sensor, with the defendant accused of infringement through the provision of the Hum-series vehicle tracking devices and related products. At issue are features for “monitor[ing] and process[ing] information and/or data related to the use and functioning of motor vehicles”.

Empire IP Plaintiff Files New Round of Complaints in Wireless Communications Campaign

Brother (2:24-cv-00134), C.R. England (5:24-cv-00376), Enterprise (6:24-cv-00116), and Nikon (1:24-cv-01258) are the latest defendants to be added to the sole litigation campaign of Fleet Connect Solutions LLC (FCS), a plaintiff associated with Texas monetization firm Empire IP LLC. FCS launched this campaign in December 2020 and has since asserted overlapping sets of 29 wireless communications patents, each received from Intellectual Ventures LLC (IV). The defendants are accused of infringement through the provision of a wide array of devices, with certain wireless communications standards (i.e., Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11ac/b/n, and LTE) at issue; for Brother, of certain label printers, printers, and scanners; for C.R. England, of certain ORBCOMM-branded tracking devices (e.g., electronic logging devices, fleet management solutions, and trailer tracking devices); for Enterprise, of fleet management and tracking solutions that incorporate Geotab-branded telematics products; and for Nikon, of certain D- and Z- series cameras.

Better Browsing Sues ASUSTek and Razer

Better Browsing LLC has targeted the provision of computers that have the Microsoft Edge browser preinstalled in new Eastern District of Texas complaints, one filed late last month against Razer (2:23-cv-00629) and another filed since, against ASUSTek (2:24-cv-00013). The same two patents in suit here, generally related to web browser features (including a zoom icon and/or group bookmarking), have already been asserted against prior defendants Opera Norway, HP Enterprise (HPE), Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, and Toshiba, sued in that order since June of last year.

Somfy Systems Sued by Empire IP Plaintiff in Smart Home and Security Products Campaign

So far in December, Empire IP LLC plaintiff IoT Innovations LLC has added a Southern District of Florida case against Somfy Systems (9:23-cv-81528) in its sole litigation campaign, launched in November 2022. The five patents-in-suit, each acquired from Intellectual Ventures LLC (IV) that July, are broadly directed to various aspects of networking and wireless communications. Somfy Systems is targeted over the provision of its Somfy Home and Security Systems-series products, which include various smart cameras, fixtures, keypads, lights, and mobile apps, as well as related encryption and wireless communications technologies.

TP-Link Added to IoT Innovations Smart Home and Security Products Campaign

IoT Innovations LLC—a plaintiff associated with Texas monetization firm Empire IP LLC—has expanded its sole litigation campaign with a suit against TP-Link and its various subsidiaries (2:23-cv-00453) in the Eastern District of Texas. The seven patents-in-suit, each acquired from Intellectual Ventures LLC (IV) in July 2022 assignments, are broadly directed to various aspects of networking and wireless communications. The NPE’s infringement allegations target the provision of a range of smart home and security products, including related apps, cameras, IoT hubs, lightbulbs, plugs, routers, sensors, software, and switches.

Empire IP Targets Rivian Automobiles in Latest Complaint

In late-August, Fleet Connect Solutions LLC (FCS)—a plaintiff associated with Texas monetization firm Empire IP LLC—added a suit against Rivian Automotive (6:23-cv-00623) in the Western District of Texas. The ten asserted patents are broadly directed to various aspects of automobile and wireless communications technologies, with the defendant accused of infringement through the provision of automobiles that incorporate Rivian FleetOS, the Rivian Vehicle Care System, Driver+, Rivian Cloud, and/or Rivian’s mobile apps. At issue are features related to wireless communications (i.e., Bluetooth, IEE 802.11ac/b/n, and LTE). Since launching its sole litigation campaign in December 2020, FCS has sued nearly 25 defendants and asserted overlapping subsets of 27 patents received from Intellectual Ventures LLC (IV).

Three Exit, Two Enter, in Empire IP’s Nearby Systems Campaign

Nearby Systems LLC has filed separate suits against Cinemark (2:23-cv-00384) and Penney OpCo (d/b/a JCPenney) (2:23-cv-00385) in the Eastern District of Texas where the Empire IP LLC plaintiff has been litigating this campaign since June 2022. The new suits follow the dismissal (with prejudice) of a case filed then against Deli Management and stays in separate cases filed against CVS and Rent-a-Center (in light of notices of settlement). The two asserted patents generally relate to “displaying location-based content on a digital map” on a mobile device.

Empire IP Expands Automotive Tracking Solutions Campaign

OBD Sensor Solutions LLC, an entity associated with Texas monetization firm Empire IP LLC, has added a case against Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile) (2:23-cv-00348) to its automotive tracking solutions campaign. At issue in the new Eastern District of Texas complaint is a single patent generally related to a device for monitoring the “use and functioning” of motor vehicles through a sensor. T-Mobile is accused of infringement through the SyncUP Drive system, with features for “monitoring and processing information data related to the use and functioning of motor vehicles” at issue.

New Wearables Case Hits Dillards

As foreshadowed by assignment records made public by the USPTO earlier this year, a second plaintiff tied to Texas monetization firm Empire IP LLC has launched its first litigation in 2023. BT Wearables LLC accuses Dillards (2:23-cv-00343) of infringing five patents through the sale of Citizen Watch watches “and related hardware, software, and functionality that among other features calculates the calories burned by the user and transmits this data to a remote device; includes a user input device for selecting an exercise; includes an accelerometer and heart rate sensor; executes speech commands from the user; couples to a mobile telephone; and identifies the activity of the user”. Last month, Cellular Link Innovations LLC sued Verizon in Empire IP’s first campaign of the year.
